Charm City, Part 2

I visited the magical Visionary Arts Museum during my visit to Baltimore — also known as Charm City —  back in September and fell in love! The museum features little known self-taught and outsider artists, many of whom struggle or have struggled with mental illness.

There were a dazzling array of mosaic work. The above piece was part of the museum’s exterior at the service entrance. To get an idea of just how big it is,  look at the bottom — you can just make out the top of a truck underneath.

This beautiful piece was made on a paper-plate and a paint-brush that had 2 or 3 hairs by Christine McCormick.

In the basement, we found a self-p0rtrait wire sculpture by Stanley Wright, called “First Dance.” In the 11/12/2000 edition of Baltimore City Paper, Mike Guiliano wrote: “It commemorates his joy at dancing for the first time as 54-year-old-man.” Below is detail of the arm.

These photos cannot begin to do this place justice. Afterward I found out that photos were not allowed. Please forgive me …

If you go to Baltimore, you have to eat at Miss Shirley’s. Her buckwheat pancakes are to die for … seriously!

“…mentally ill artists? No such thing.”
    “Redundant’s more like it”
    “Stop saying that!”
    “NO. YOU stop saying that!”
    “Shut up!”
    “NO, YOU shut up!!!!!”
