I love this time of year for all the music I can see.

The Bad Plus — fabulous last Tuesday. Because this show was part of the JVC Jazz Festival, there was zero crowd noise during the concert. I mean ZERO … no chatter, no glasses clinking, no cell phones ringing. It was so quiet that I got a severe case of the church giggles watching drummer Dave King play. He started to look like the drum-playing muppet, Animal.

The pews at the venue began to shake. Swampboy shot me a forbidding look just like my father did during Sunday mass at St. Ignatius. Tears were streaming down my face. People were turning around to look at me. I was completely out of control.

Eventually, the only thing that worked was biting down extremely hard on my bottom lip and thinking of my childhood dog, Ginger, dying.

The Fab Faux — Swampboy wanted to see this well-known Beatles cover-band. They’re known for their absolutely spot-on versions of the Beatles entire catalog. It’s true — down to the cow-bell. Every little note and space was there, right J?

Alabama3 — Every 10 years of so, they cross the Atlantic from the UK. You know them because they wrote and performed Got Yourself a Gun from The Sopranos, which is their least interesting song. They have a whole stage persona lampooning politics and religion in the vein of Frank Zappa, with original acid house jazz rock music. Tickets may still be had for tonight’s show at Irving Plaza. I’ll be there, looking to be saved by the Reverend D-Wayne Love.

I really like your comparison of the drummer to the muppet 🙂
