I left my heart in New Orleans, part 2

One of the great things about Jazz Fest is that you have the chance to catch amazing blues and jazz musicians that you cannot see elsewhere … either because they don’t tour anymore or they’re in poor health, making travel a no-no.

Over the past 6 years, I’ve been honored to see so many late musicians in this category, among them were Elvin Jones, Herbie Mann and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.

This year, I saw Snooks Eaglin in the blues tent. He’s the blues version of Superman: he’s blind … he’s played with everybody … he can play guitar on the side of his head … he can leap tall buildings in single bound.

Here’s a youtube preview of Snooks from approx 20 years ago, playing Red Beans with his long-time bassplayer George Porter Jr. who is a founding member of The Funky Meters.
