I left my heart in New Orleans, part 1

There’s a band I heard for the first time in New Orleans last week that I can’t get enough of now — The Bad Plus. They rocked the jazz tent at the Jazz & Heritage Festival on Saturday.

Now let me tell you about the jazz tent. It is the most dignified place of all the 7 stages at the festival. If you like the music, you bop your head to the music while firmly seated in your chair. If you want to get up and dance, then you take yourself over to the gospel tent and let the holy spirit move you to jump up and down and sing hallelujah. But you don’t do that at the jazz tent — it’s bad form.

But, for The Bad Plus that day, protocol went out the window and people went nuts.

The Bad Plus is bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King. All three are from the Midwest and have known each other since adolescence. They officially formed in 2000.

No one sings, which, as some of you know, I LOVE! They play originals and covers. Not just covers, but “get out your black beret” cool deconstructions of:

  • Smells like Teen Spirit by Nirvana
  • The Guys in Love with You by Burt Bacharach (did you hear this too on your parents’ turntable in the early 70s?).
  • Tom Sawyer by Rush
  • Life on Mars by David Bowie

When Swampboy and I got home, I checked out their website for tour dates. Looks like we just missed a week’s residence at the Blue Note in March – ARGGGHHH!!!

Thanks for the brief concert. Your taste in music is unerring — and much better than mine.

PS Did I tell you I’m learning to play guitar?
