Pop C

He came over from Ireland on a ship when he was 18 with his brother Jack. Before leaving his big family in Kilrush, County Clare, they held his “American Wake.”

The dashing man in the photograph is himself, as they say in Ireland. I love the expression on his face and his outfit — looking spiffy as all get out with the Scottish girl he met in the NYC area. He later married her and celebrated their 50 year anniversary before either of them died.

Me ma and da (also Irish-speak) are on a vacation now, crossing the Atlantic on a ship and, in a way, retracing the steps of this gutsy man that began nearly 80 years ago.

I miss him still, but never so much as when I see his old car around. I saw this beauty in the Berkshires last weekend.

Hope you have your old Galaxie in Tir na nOg, Pop!
