About Last Night

Me and Swampboy met up in NYC with 2 old friends, both named Steve, to see a new-to-us band in the Rodeo Bar.

I love the Rodeo Bar. It’s gritty, tiny, dirty … peanuts are free and shells get tossed on the ground. Unless you can score a table up front by the stage, you must then prepare yourself to get jostled by the crowd, the busboys, and the waittresses delivering drinks to wash down the greasy Mexican food.

It’s perfect.

One of the Steves has a crush on the girl in the band, Elana James, and insisted that we go with him last night to see her. We had met up with this Steve on New Year’s Eve to see Government Mule at the Beacon Theatre. I am not a huge Mule fan (Swampboy picked the activity for this year’s NYE), but I do love the grandeur of the Beacon. I was last there in 1988 to see Frank Zappa. It’s a beautiful old theatre with statues, wall murals, Art Deco fixtures, and it has great acoustics.

We began at Hill Country BBQ for dinner. If you love BBQ, you must try this place when you’re in Manhattan. Then we ambled down the street to the Rodeo. Elana was great. Steve called it “Western Swing.” To me, it Django Reinhardt meets the Andrews Sisters on a thick carpet of Bluegrass.

I am a BIG lover of BBQ. No good places here on Cape Cod 😦
I get my fix when we go to Boston which has several very yummy places. But if I am ever in Manhattan with a craving I will check out Hill Country.

Nice to see you in your new home!
